These classic “folk” sermons, handed down through generations, burst into life on the Morning Star stage. There are no trombones in this production but rather the sound of the human voice in the person of the "folk preacher." James Weldon Johnson when writing these colorful God stories said that the trombone was "the instrument possessing above all others the power to express the wide and varied range of emotions encompassed by the human voice — and with greater amplitude."
Johnson wrote seven pieces in the early 1900s, which will be included in this production: "The Creation", "The Prodigal Son", and "Go Down Death" are featured. "That's My King", originally preached by Shadrach Meshach Lockridge, will top off this rousing play. Traditional spirituals such as "Oh Sinner Man" and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" are sung by the chorus of "church members".
Weaving together great spirituals, scripture, power, poetry, and passion, this worshipful musical review will set your toes tapping, bring a tear to your eye, and lift your heart in praise to our God! What a great way to celebrate Black History month! February 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23 Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 pm Sundays at 3 pm
